Dogs Arthritis

Dogs arthritis is the common name for a condition in dogs that generally effects the hip socket of the animal. It can be very severe and can lead to extremely painful arthritis and even to lameness. Unfortunately this problem is more common in certain breads of dogs and is a polygenic trait. Often it effects the larger breeds of dogs and can be greatly influenced by environmental factors.

A normal healthy hip joint consists of a femur connected to the pelvis, the end of the femur is pretty much spherical and fits into a concaved socket that is located within the pelvis. Normally at the point where both the femur and the pelvis are in contact with each other both are covered with cartilage. The role of the cartilage is to ensure that the hard and ridged bones have flexibility and the joint a wide range of movement. Common problems with standard hip function include dysplasia, hip trauma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Dysplasia is identified by two major abnormalities; firstly the rounded end of the hip bone is not held tightly by the socket in the pelvis, secondly either or both the ball of the femur and the socket of the pelvis are not smooth or round. When the ball of the hip is not held in socket of the pelvis securely this can cause all manner of problems resulting in pain, discomfort and limited mobility and is commonly called dogs arthritis.
