Canine Arthritis

Canine arthritis is a condition that effects dogs, most commonly it manifests in the hind legs of larger breeds of dogs. This problem can be very distressing for the animal as well as for the owner of the animal and often results in limited mobility for the dog. A degree of pain can also be associated with this condition and in some cases it can led to lameness.

The condition is often a genetic weakness that is made worse by environmental factors. The problem is that the ball of the hip bone and the socket of the pelvis can often become rough, jagged and not smooth. This can then lead to the ball of the hip bone and the socket of the pelvis not sitting closely together. If there is not a snug fit between the socket and the ball then the joint can become painful, and the joint will not work properly. This often leads to limited mobility and lameness

This problem in the joint often results in abnormal wear and tear within the joint as it moves. The body reacts to this by trying to repair the cartilage in the joint, however in most cases this reaction is simply to slow and the joint will degrade and ultimately not be able to support the body weight. The cycle of repair can also cause inflammation of the joint and canine arthritis
